Angiography |
|
Angiography is a medical imaging test in which images are taken to visualise the inner opening (lumen) of blood filled structures, including arteries, veins and the heart chambers. Physicians often use this test to study narrow, blocked, enlarged, or malformed arteries or veins in many parts of the body, including the brain, heart, abdomen, and legs, or to assess the morphology and function of the heart chambers. When the arteries are studied, the test is also called "arteriography". If the veins are studied, it is called a "venography" or "phlebography". If the heart is studied, the test is called "cardiac angiography".
To create images of blood filled structures throughout the body, physicians may use one of three imaging technologies:
- X-Rays with catheters ("conventional" or "catheter" angiography);
- X-Rays with computed tomography ("CT angiography");
- magnetic resonance imaging ("MR angiography").
Since blood cannot be visualised using X-Rays, physicians have to inject a contrast agent to make the blood flowing inside the blood vessels or cardiac chambers visible on an X-Ray. Contrast media may also be used during MR angiography to reduce the time of the exam, reduce image artifacts and improve the diagnostic accuracy of the exam.
